The postponed Indigenous Mapping Workshop will be held at the:

Wilin Centre for Indigenous Art and Cultural Development
Victorian College of the Arts, University of Melbourne.

For over 15 years, the Wilin Centre for Indigenous Arts and Cultural Development has connected Indigenous visual, design and performing artists with a pathway to their future in the arts.

About the Wilin Centre

The Wilin Centre works with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities to identify, recruit and support potential and practicing Indigenous artists to study and refine their academic and artistic skills at the Faculty of the Victorian College of the Arts and the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music at The University of Melbourne.

Situated at the heart of Melbourne's Arts Precinct, the Wilin Centre fosters innovation in the research, development, advocacy and presentation of Indigenous arts and cultural practice.

When can I attend the postponed IMW Australia?

Our team is closely monitoring the current situation surrounding COVID-19. As soon as we receive health advice that ensures the face-to-face event can safely proceed, we will advise as to when that date will be. At this point in time, our team estimate that this is likely to be mid 2021, however this is subject to the Australia’s changing circumstances surrounding public health.

Can I apply to attend now?

We understand that it is exciting waiting for the face-to-face workshop to be rescheduled. At this point in time, we are only taking expressions of interest before formal applications are reopened. Access the form here.

Who should attend the workshop?

The Indigenous Mapping Workshop is for members of, or people working directly with, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities or organisations in Australia. Preference will be given to:

  • Decision-makers and mapping or technology specialists

  • Applicants who demonstrate interest and ability to implement and make effective use of Google mapping technology within their community

  • Applicants who are currently working on mapping projects, or are planning mapping projects in their communities.

Do I need to have a background in GIS?

The Indigenous Mapping Workshop offers different training streams for each of the tools, from beginner to advanced. We seek to create accessible programming for all levels and experiences. If you have any concerns or would like to know what to expect at the workshop, please feel free to contact us. We would be more than happy to help you out!

How much does the workshop cost?

The workshop is offered to participants free of cost. There are a limited number of seats for workshop attendees. Those interested in the workshop must apply and confirm acceptance into the workshop before making travel arrangements. At this point in time, the IMW Melbourne has been postponed and is taking expressions of interest only. Access the form here.

What is included in the workshop?

Training modules: Access to 18+ hours of mapping and geospatial training sessions including Google, Mapbox, ArcGIS, QGIS, Fulcrum and Mapping with Drones.

Plenary sessions: Entry to keynote and participant presentations.

Food and beverages: Breakfast, lunch and snacks are provided to all participants.

Training materials: Access to all the training materials and data sets.

Attendees are responsible for the cost of their own transportation, lodging and any other travel costs.
